Marvel’s Wolverine Appears to Edit Out Mystique’s Lesbian Relationship in Certain Areas
Rumors circulating on social media suggest that Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Wolverine has undergone censorship in the Middle East, specifically removing references to Mystique’s marriage to Tyger.
The reason behind this censorship likely stems from the fact that both characters are women, and same-sex relationships are illegal in several Middle Eastern countries, with severe penalties in place.
Numerous images showcasing the censored content have surfaced online, including one that depicts a wedding scene between Mystique and Tyger, shared by a user responding to an Insomniac Games post. The user questioned, “Why did you censor Mystique’s lesbian relationship in Lebanon?” Another post features a redacted letter that mentions their relationship.
A particularly compelling piece of evidence comes from a video on the subreddit r/PlayWolverine, where users discuss the removal of scenes involving Mystique and Tyger. One user noted, “In my version of the game, scenes mentioning Mystique and Tyger censor or cut out anything mentioning their relationship. I thought it was a glitch at first, but as I played through, I realized it wasn’t.”
The video’s credibility is bolstered by the fact that while dialogue referring to Mystique’s “wife” has been omitted, the background audio continues uninterrupted.
If these claims hold true, this wouldn’t be the first instance of Insomniac Games or Sony censoring content for specific regional markets. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 also faced censorship in parts of the Middle East, where Pride flags were removed and a mission featuring a young gay couple was altered to eliminate references to their relationship.
