Mass Effect 5 Story Insights Shared Following Game Cancellation
The fifth chapter in the Mass Effect saga was first announced six years ago, but it remained in the early stages of development with a small team, leaving fans in the dark about its progress and the talent involved.
With BioWare’s recent closure, several former employees have stepped forward to share their experiences on the now-canceled Mass Effect title. Among them is Derek Künsken, the acclaimed author of the sci-fi novel The Quantum Magician. Following the game’s cancellation and BioWare’s shutdown, Künsken disclosed that he had dedicated the last five years to working on Mass Effect 5.
Künsken collaborated closely with BioWare’s creative director Parrish Ley and narrative director Mary DeMarle on the ill-fated sequel. Alongside Catherynne Valente, who previously penned a tie-in novel for the series, Mass Effect Andromeda: Annihilation, he was involved in brainstorming ideas for the story, characters, lore, and sci-fi concepts.
On social media, both Valente and Künsken expressed their disappointment and pride in what they achieved at BioWare. “We were working on a great game,” Valente remarked in response to news about BioWare’s closure. It seems that BioWare had assembled a talented writing team for Mass Effect 5, aiming to deliver a narrative experience that could rival the original trilogy.
Currently, both writers are uncertain about how much they can disclose regarding their work. However, they hope to share insights about the game that could have been in the future. While this may be bittersweet for fans, it could also spark new theories about the Mass Effect universe.
One project that will carry on despite the cancellation of the game is the television adaptation based on the nearly two-decade-old franchise.
