Konami has confirmed that while online modes are absent from the Master Collection editions of Metal Gear Solid 3 and 4, Peace Walker will retain its online features in Master Collection Volume 2.
Metal Gear Solid 4 finally breaking free from its PS3 confines was the big news for Metal Gear fans during last night’s PlayStation State of Play. But for me, as someone still rocking a PS3, the real highlight was the return of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker on the Nintendo Switch 2. This title is often overlooked in the series, and having a portable version that doesn’t require the awkward claw hand for camera control is a game changer.
When it was announced that Metal Gear Online 2 wouldn’t be returning with Metal Gear Solid 4, I felt a twinge of concern. However, the PlayStation Blog post about the collection reassured me with some exciting news: “This title can be played online in CO-OPS, a cooperative mode for 2 to 4 players, as well as in VERSUS OPS, a competitive mode for up to 6 players.”
I typically lean towards single-player experiences, but the co-op mode in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is one of its standout features. The game diverges from traditional Metal Gear gameplay, embracing a mission-based structure reminiscent of Monster Hunter, complete with lengthy boss battles that encourage cooperative play. There are even missions where you face off against iconic monsters like Tigrex, Rathalos, and Gear REX, an original creation inspired by Metal Gear Rex, which I hope Capcom adds to Monster Hunter Wilds.
This might explain why Peace Walker doesn’t always get the love it deserves compared to other main entries. I’ll admit, I wasn’t a fan during my first playthrough; it took a second run for me to appreciate its brilliance and recognize it as a worthy addition to the series. Retaining the co-op feature will hopefully give Peace Walker the chance to shine once again.
Death Stranding 2 is set to launch on PC in March, featuring “unlocked framerates” and ultra widescreen support—Kojima fans, rejoice!
