Mastering the Ladder Setup in Animal Crossing: New Horizons: A Guide to Permanent Ladders

One of the essential early tools you can craft in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the ladder, which allows you to navigate cliffs when you haven’t yet built many inclines. Even with a few ramps scattered across your island, there will be times when you need to pull out a ladder. Thanks to the new 2.0 update, you can now create permanent ladders, making it easier to traverse your island without the hassle of equipping or carrying a ladder. Before diving into more tips, let’s break down how to obtain and use these permanent ladders.

**How to Build a Permanent Ladder**
To kick things off, head over to Nook’s Cranny and check out the cabinet on the right. In the Miscellaneous section, you’ll find the recipe for the ladder set-up kit. This recipe costs 2,000 bells, which is a bit pricier than most, but the convenience it offers is worth it. Purchase it to unlock the recipe.

Once you have the recipe on your NookPhone, find a workbench to craft the wooden ladder set-up kit. Here’s what you’ll need:
– 1 ladder
– 5 wood

If you don’t have a ladder on hand, crafting one requires:
– 4 wood
– 4 hardwood
– 4 softwood

So, to create each set-up kit, you’ll need a total of nine wood, four hardwood, and four softwood.

**How Do Ladder Set-Up Kits Work?**
With a ladder set-up kit in your inventory, approach a cliffside from either the top or bottom, open your inventory, and use the kit. The ladder will automatically be propped against the cliff, allowing you to climb up or down without the usual hassle. To use it, just press the A button; you won’t jump on it by simply walking into it. If you want to relocate a ladder, just walk up to it and press the Y button to remove it, so you don’t need to stress about getting the placement perfect right away. Keep in mind that you’ll need a bit of space to fit a ladder; for example, you can’t place one directly in front of flowers.

These ladders are much less obtrusive than traditional ramps and inclines, which is a big plus. They allow for smoother movement without drastically altering the aesthetics of your island. From certain angles, they can be nearly invisible, and they fit into tighter spaces where ramps wouldn’t work, like along a beach, giving you more design flexibility.

**Is There a Limit on How Many Ladders You Can Have?**
While many items you can craft have limits, we haven’t found a cap on ladders yet, even after placing ten. We’ll keep testing to see if a limit exists and update you if we discover one.

**Can Ladder Set-Up Kits Be Customized?**
Absolutely! You can customize your ladder set-up kits to change their color. The default color is a natural wood tone, but you have several options:
– Natural
– Blue
– Red
– Yellow
– Green
– White

As with other items, you can customize the appearance at a workbench, and it will cost one customization kit each time you want to change the color.
