Matthew Lillard Shares His Thoughts on Netflix’s Live-Action Scooby-Doo Series
Netflix is gearing up for a new live-action spin on Scooby-Doo, and Matthew Lillard, who famously portrayed Shaggy in the early 2000s films, has shared his thoughts on this revival. Lillard starred alongside a stellar cast, including Freddie Prinze Jr. as Fred, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne, and Linda Cardellini as Velma, so he definitely knows a thing or two about the iconic Mystery Inc. crew.
“I’m really happy for them. I think the show needs to come back,” Lillard expressed. “It’s a fantastic way for kids to engage with storytelling. For many, it’s their first taste of ghost stories, emphasizing friendship and teamwork in solving mysteries—usually with a dangerous white guy behind the mask. These are important lessons for kids.”
Although Lillard’s Scooby-Doo films received mixed reviews initially, they have since garnered a dedicated fanbase and served as an early platform for James Gunn to hone his writing skills. With this new adaptation, Lillard hopes Netflix captures the essence of what makes Scooby-Doo special, steering clear of another disappointing version.
While casting details are still under wraps, it’s been revealed that the series will delve into how the Mystery Inc. gang formed during a summer camp. After a mysterious crime occurs, the only witness is a Great Dane puppy with all the answers and a craving for Scooby snacks.
“I think having it back is great,” Lillard said. “I hope they stick to what’s tried and true while putting their own spin on it. But I’m a bit of a purist when it comes to this franchise. At its heart, it’s about friendship, and that’s something I hope they preserve.”
With no release date announced yet, fans will have to stay tuned to see how the new iteration of Mystery Inc. and their canine companion tackle the challenges ahead.
