Mayor Zohran Mamdani Launches New Twitch Series ‘Talk with the People’

Zohran Mamdani has made a name for himself in politics, particularly in the New York mayor’s office, by leveraging the power of social media. Now, he’s diving into another tech frontier that could enhance his connection with both local constituents and a wider national audience.

It’s been confirmed that Mayor Mamdani will kick off a Twitch streaming series called “Talk with the People,” starting on May 21 at 4 p.m. This series will also be streamed live on platforms like YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, and Bluesky. However, Twitch, originally a gaming platform that has broadened its scope to include political content, will serve as the primary venue for “Talk with the People.” During the streams, the Mayor will engage directly with the public by answering questions from the Twitch chat.

“With the launch of ‘Talk with the People,’ we’re bringing City Hall to the platforms where New Yorkers already are — speaking directly with the people,” Mayor Mamdani stated. “By launching the country’s first recurring cross-platform stream hosted by an elected official, where I’ll answer New Yorkers’ questions live on Twitch, we’re opening up a direct line of conversation between our government and the people, especially younger generations who’ve been ignored for too long.”

While “Talk with the People” may evoke the spirit of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “Fireside Chats” from the 1930s and ’40s, it actually pays homage to the iconic socialist Mayor LaGuardia’s 1940s radio show, “Talk to the People,” which utilized the latest technology of its time to communicate directly with New Yorkers.

Mayor Mamdani is taking this concept further by not just talking to the people, but engaging with them. Let’s hope he’s got a handle on Twitch lingo. And don’t sweat it, Zohran: If someone drops this image in the chat, it’s a positive sign.
