Meccha Chameleon: The Surprising Hit That Sold Millions in Just Days!

It’s that exciting moment again: another “friendslop” game is taking Steam by storm. Meccha Chameleon, developed by lemorion_1224 from Japan, has recently peaked at over 200,000 concurrent players, according to SteamDB. As of June 15, it has sold more than two million copies and raked in nearly $10 million. Clips showcasing players camouflaging themselves in the environment are going viral on social media.

At its core, Meccha Chameleon is all about hiding. When a round begins, players must find a spot within the level to conceal themselves. The unique twist is that players can paint themselves to blend in with their surroundings, much like a chameleon changes its colors in nature.

The game shares similarities with Prop Hunt, the party game that started as a mode in Garry’s Mod and later made its way into other online titles, including Call of Duty. In each match, some players take on the role of hunters while the chameleons hide. Once a chameleon is discovered, they switch roles and become hunters. If the server host enables it, hiders will occasionally whistle to give hunters a clue about their location.

The painting mechanic adds an extra layer of strategy for chameleons. The more creatively you can paint yourself, the better your chances of hiding effectively. While plain surfaces like walls allow for a single color, shadows and your character’s 3D model can make you an easy target for hunters.

However, if you can blend in with intricate designs, such as artwork or patterned wallpaper, you become much harder to spot. Hunters are less likely to notice you in these areas, as it’s unlikely anyone could replicate such detailed patterns, enhancing your camouflage. If you’re not an artistic genius, look for darker spots and crevices on the map to improve your chances of survival.

Meccha Chameleon is currently gaining traction, much like other successful “friendslop” games from the past couple of years, such as Peak, Lethal Company, and REPO. While the novelty of the painting feature may fade over time, for now, it offers a fun and affordable way to enjoy some laughs with friends at just $5.99 USD. It’s exclusively available on Steam, with no console release in sight.
