Meet the Mysterious New Character in Danganronpa 2×2!

This morning’s Nintendo Direct may have leaned heavily on nostalgia, but it did unveil something that truly got my heart racing: a remake of one of my all-time favorite games. After a delay pushing it to 2027, Danganronpa 2×2 is set to drop on January 14, and we got an exciting glimpse of the new “Slayhem” route. This fresh narrative will still unfold on the sun-soaked Jabberwock Island, but it promises new murder mysteries featuring the original cast. Plus, there’s a mysterious new character introduced, and I can’t shake the feeling that he’s up to no good.

The initial part of the Direct showcased scenes from the original Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, which has received a visual upgrade from its original PlayStation Portable version. This is a welcome change, especially since even the console and PC ports struggled with clarity on larger screens. Surprisingly, the trailer also revealed a decent amount of content from the new Slayhem mode, which I expected would be kept under wraps to maintain suspense. We caught glimpses of various scenes and dialogues that tease potential new cases, although the studio cleverly obscured any new victims or murderers, leading fans to speculate about possible red herrings. Characters mention “Slayhem” items and “weird cards” given by the mastermind controlling the murderous Monokuma, suggesting that the black-and-white bear might be introducing a new game mechanic to stir up chaos among the cast.

In a particularly intense moment, Monokuma is seen brandishing a gun and seemingly executing one of his students over a volcano—classic Monokuma! There’s also a scene in the Class Trial courtroom, which is somehow ablaze while players work to solve the various murder cases. It seems Jabberwock Island is set to be even more chaotic than in the original Danganronpa 2.

The most intriguing detail from the trailer is the introduction of additional teenagers on the island. If you missed the Direct, you might not have noticed the new character participating in Monokuma’s deadly game in the Slayhem mode. This character doesn’t appear to be from any previous games or external media, and his design is generic enough that it’s hard to guess his Ultimate Talent. Spike Chunsoft’s revamped website doesn’t provide any clues about him either, keeping his identity a mystery for now.

One theory circulating among fans is that he could be Ryota Mitarai, the Ultimate Animator from the Danganronpa 3 anime, which would fit into the broader Danganronpa narrative. However, I’m skeptical they would keep that under wraps if it were true, especially since Ryota is known for being more reserved than this new character seems to be.

But he might not be the only newcomer in this killing game. At the start of the trailer, there’s an ad on a TV screen mentioning “five islands each with its own unique character.” Danganronpa fans will recognize that these five islands refer to the distinct locations within the Jabberwock archipelago. In the original game, each island served as a backdrop for different murder mysteries, each with its own unique vibe. It’s unclear whether “unique character” means each island will have its own distinct aesthetic or if there will be a new character tied to each one. We’ve reached out for clarification and will update if we hear back.

Regardless, it’s clear there’s at least one more player in this deadly game, and I’m eager to see what role he’ll play. I’ve speculated that original protagonist Hajime Hinata might meet his end in the Slayhem route, and while it would be more engaging to play as an established character after that, this new guy could take on the role of the detective in this new storyline. Alternatively, he could turn out to be another unpredictable character who complicates matters for the students of Hope’s Peak Academy. For now, fans are dubbing him John Danganronpa, much like how others are referring to the leaked Persona 6 protagonist as John Persona. Who is this newcomer on Jabberwock Island? Will he feel like an unnecessary addition to Danganronpa 2, or will he enhance the story? We’ll find out when Danganronpa 2×2 launches on January 14.
