Megabonk, the Exciting Roguelite of 2025, Embraces a Spooky Holiday Theme

Megabonk, a 3D reimagining of Vampire Survivors that took the gaming world by storm in 2025, has just rolled out its Halloween update, perfectly timed for the winter festivities. After all, Christmas has its fair share of spooky themes, right? Think A Christmas Carol, Krampus, and A Charlie Brown Christmas…

“I’ve finally wrapped up the update I was working on,” shared solo developer Vedin in a post on Steam. “What started as a small Halloween update grew into something bigger than I initially planned.” He went on to detail the fresh content included in the Spooky Update:

Megabonk is a bold reinterpretation of Poncle’s Vampire Survivors, infused with its own unique twists, notably transforming it into a 3D, third-person action experience. Released in September, it quickly gained immense popularity, and rightfully so! It’s an engaging title, even if many of its concepts aren’t entirely new. Interestingly, it launched a couple of months before Poncle announced its own 3D take on Vampire Survivors, which will also incorporate deckbuilding roguelite elements.

In addition to the new features mentioned, the Spooky Update brings a slew of bug fixes, new “advanced” settings for niche adjustments, and various balancing changes. Players can also access the game’s console, aimed at enhancing speedrunning opportunities. This update has already received a follow-up patch to address some issues that arose from the added spookiness.

The game is definitely worth a look. Many players have already jumped in, leading to its nomination for Best Debut Indie Game at this year’s Game Awards, although the developer later withdrew it from consideration, citing that it’s not truly his first game—unlike the eventual winners who chose to remain in the running.
