Memory V Brings the Memorymoog Experience Without the High Cost or Hassle
The Memorymoog is renowned for its colossal sound but infamous for its unreliability. Fortunately, you can now experience its iconic Moog tones without the hassle or hefty vintage price tag, thanks to Arturia’s Memory V emulator.
Produced between 1982 and 1985, the Memorymoog was Moog’s last polyphonic synth before the company faced bankruptcy in 1987. Musicians adored its sound, often likening it to having six Minimoogs in one unit, and the Memorymoog+ was among the pioneers to incorporate MIDI. It emerged during a pivotal time when the synth world was transitioning from analog to digital.
However, it was also known for being rushed to market, leading to tuning issues, unreliable power supplies, shoddy construction, and challenging maintenance—none of which are concerns for software. With only about 3,500 units produced, vintage models now fetch around $15,000, though you might find one needing repairs for closer to $10,000. In contrast, Memory V is priced at just $149, or even less for returning customers.
Memory V features three oscillators and a classic Moog lowpass ladder filter per voice, mirroring the original’s design. Its interface closely replicates the multitude of knobs and buttons found on the original synth. Plus, you can stack all six voices—totaling 18 oscillators—for massive lead sounds. Among Arturia’s extensive plugin library, Memory V stands out for its ability to produce some of the most powerful tones.
Arturia has also integrated modern features that were absent in the ’80s. It supports MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE) for intricate per-note control and includes a drag-and-drop modulation system with multiple envelopes, LFOs, and a function generator. Additionally, a robust multi-arpeggiator allows for the creation of complex rhythmic and melodic patterns.
Memory V shines with classic ‘80s brass sounds, lush pads, and rich strings. You can even adjust the level of analog instability to replicate the sound of a Memorymoog in need of repair.
