Meta Launches Pocket: A Fresh Take on Content Management

Mozilla discontinued the popular read-it-later Pocket app last year, and now Meta is introducing a new app also named Pocket, but with a completely different, AI-driven concept. This fresh app allows users to create and share interactive “gizmos” generated from AI prompts.

Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, is fully embracing AI as the future of social media, envisioning a platform where users can craft interactive experiences to share with others. The launch of Pocket seems to be a step toward realizing that vision, especially after Meta recruited engineers from Atma Sciences Inc., the creators of an app called Gizmo. Meta secured a non-exclusive license to utilize their technology, and early glimpses of Pocket on Google Play suggest it bears a resemblance to Gizmo.

According to Pocket’s description on Google Play, users can “scroll a feed of gizmos from people around the world.” These gizmos respond to touch and the tilt of your device, play sound effects and favorite tunes, and can even access your camera or pull images from your photo library. Some gizmos are designed to interact with their environment. Meta defines a gizmo as a “playable AI-generated experience,” and when you share one, you have the option to allow others to remix it.

However, if you’re in the US, it appears that Pocket isn’t available for download just yet. Some staff members noticed a message on the Google Play listing indicating that the app “isn’t available in your country,” and it’s currently missing from the US Apple App Store as well. Meta has also mentioned in its help center that the app is “not yet available everywhere.” The company has not responded to requests for further information.
