Meta Unveils Plans for Sleek VR Multimedia Headset Set to Launch in Spring 2027

Meta’s journey into the realms of VR and AR has been a bit of a rollercoaster, especially with the buzz around the metaverse. Recently, the spotlight has been on the controversy surrounding the Ray-Ban Meta Glasses, which have raised eyebrows for capturing videos of people in public without their consent, all while several VR game studios have shut their doors. Despite this, Meta is determined to shift perceptions with the launch of its latest hardware, the Meta VR Glasses, touted as the “next generation of virtual reality.”

At first glance, these glasses bear a striking resemblance to the Apple Vision Pro, complete with a separate tethered battery pack for power. This design choice has allowed Meta to create a sleek, sunglasses-like form factor, claiming a lightweight 100 grams on the face. Under the hood, they’re powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Reality Elite chip, featuring 12GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a microSD card slot for expansion.

The Meta VR Glasses will support around 75 VR games at launch, including some exciting new titles like a virtual reality port of the fifth Ace Attorney game and Xbox Cloud Gaming compatibility via a controller. However, Meta is clearly positioning these glasses as a multimedia powerhouse. They can stream IMAX-resolution and 3D movies through platforms like Disney+, which is set to support the app from day one, and even offer immersive sports experiences. Of course, they can also be used for studying.

One notable design aspect is that the cameras for spatial augmented reality applications are more pronounced than those on previous Meta Glasses, which may deter some from using them for covert recordings. This design choice supports more advanced applications. The visuals are displayed on 2.4K micro-OLED screens, which Meta claims are among their best yet.

The key challenge for Meta will be attracting those who haven’t yet embraced VR or AR technology, a hurdle that even Apple faced with its own device. Priced at $1299 and set to launch in spring 2027, the question remains: will a lighter design and access to immersive entertainment alongside gaming be enough to convince skeptics to dive into the VR experience?
