Metaphor: ReFantazio Developers Prioritize Thoughtful Sequel Over Rushed Release Following JRPG Success
Metaphor: ReFantazio has made quite the splash, earning critical acclaim and racking up awards, making it one of Atlus’ fastest-selling titles. So, naturally, a sequel seems like a given, right? However, Katsura Hashino, the director behind both Metaphor and the Persona series, has expressed a desire to take his time before diving into a follow-up. He emphasizes that whatever comes next must truly resonate with fans.
“When we first embarked on this project, we aimed to establish it as a cornerstone of our brand at Atlus, alongside franchises like Shin Megami Tensei and Persona,” Hashino shared, highlighting his vision for Metaphor: ReFantazio.
He continued, “That said, just because we achieved a certain level of success doesn’t mean we want to rush into a sequel. We need to carefully consider how to build on the values we infused into this game and ensure that any continuation is genuinely worthwhile for the fans eagerly awaiting it.”
Currently, the team is focused on confirming they’re heading in the right direction before expanding the brand further. “We’re exploring what we can do with this series, but we won’t act hastily just because of our initial success,” he clarified.
In related news, Hashino mentioned that he hasn’t been deeply involved with the Persona franchise since the last main installment, although he remains connected to the team.
As fans anticipate Persona 6, developers hint at “opportunities in 2026 to discuss future developments” in celebration of the JRPG’s 30th anniversary.
