Mewgenics is shaping up to be a roguelike powerhouse, potentially surpassing the player counts of popular titles like Vampire Survivors and even The Binding of Isaac, crafted by developer Edmund McMillen. This latest roguelike from McMillen, known for his iconic work on The Binding of Isaac, and Tyler Glaiel, creator of The End is Nigh, has been a long time coming. After 14 years and one cancellation, Mewgenics has launched to rave reviews, becoming the first game of 2026 to achieve a 90+ rating and recouping its development costs within just three hours. Since its release, Mewgenics has seen its player count on Steam soar, peaking at 83,956 players yesterday. This surpasses The Binding of Isaac’s previous record of 70,701 during the launch of its Repentance expansion in 2021, according to SteamDB. Glaiel took to Twitter to celebrate, stating, “Mew has more concurrent players than Isaac’s peak now. Crazy.” However, the competition doesn’t stop there. Glaiel also mentioned, “I’m being told that now that we passed Vampire Survivors’ peak, the only roguelike/lite with more peak concurrent players than us is Hades 2.” He expressed excitement for the weekend, where Mewgenics could challenge Hades 2 for the top spot, although it faces a tough challenge, as Hades 2 peaked at 112,947 players upon its September launch, a fact Glaiel acknowledged, calling it “a very tough boss.” Despite being a strategy game in a niche genre compared to action-packed titles like Hades and Isaac, Mewgenics’ player peak is a remarkable achievement. Additionally, Glaiel confirmed that the game has sold “half a million units in 36 hours.” After 20 hours of gameplay, I’ve fallen head over heels for Mewgenics, the only roguelike chaotic enough to let me train necromancer cats.
