Mewgenics Features a Resetti-Like Character Ready to Ruin Your Game if You Save Scum
Mewgenics, the cat-breeding tactical roguelike crafted by Tyler Glaeil and Edmund McMillen, is still basking in its well-deserved spotlight. After recouping its entire development budget within just three hours of its February 10 launch, Mewgenics shattered its own record for concurrent players on Steam, hitting an impressive 83,956 on February 11, surpassing the previous mark of 65,962. It’s likely to keep this momentum going today. While Glaeil mentioned that it could take “months or years” for players to uncover all the secrets in Mewgenics, one player managed to find a character named Steven in under 24 hours. Dubbed the “Mr. Resetti” of Mewgenics, Steven punishes players who try to save scum by taking control away from them. The first sighting of Steven was reported on a community forum by a player who had to exit during a battle. Fans of The Binding of Isaac may recognize him as a boss from that game, but he actually made his debut in McMillen’s Newgrounds title, Time Fcuk. Steven shows up in Mewgenics if you quit a run without saving, which players might be tempted to do when a fight isn’t going their way. As Steven puts it, he’ll appear if he catches you “fcuking with the game save.” The first encounter with Steven involves him scolding you for your save-scumming attempts, but he warns that the “gloves are off” if you try it again. On your second quit and reload during a run, he’ll inflict one of your cats with the “Deja Vu” disorder, giving them a 10 percent chance to miss their turn. However, the fourth attempt at save scumming is where things get serious, as Steven will take over your current Mewgenics playthrough and try to finish it for you. Those who have let Steven take control report that he’s quite terrible at it. For instance, a YouTuber managed to capture the AI-controlled Steven making it through the first two fights, but he was already down to just one cat by the end of the second battle.
