Mewgenics’ Remarkable Success Promises Wider Reach for Its Kittens
Mewgenics, the latest roguelite RPG battler from the minds behind The Binding of Isaac and The End Is Nigh, has taken the gaming world by storm. Released on February 10, it quickly climbed to the #2 spot on Steam’s bestsellers list and boasted an impressive 115,428 simultaneous players—remarkable for a single-player, offline title. At the time of writing, it even surpassed Overwatch in player count. In light of this success, the developers have confirmed that Mewgenics will be making its way to consoles and will also receive downloadable content. Plus, the game’s fantastic soundtrack is now available for purchase.
Mewgenics blends elements from Slay the Spire, X-COM, and Rogue Legacy, inviting players to lead a team of cats on a quest filled with turn-based RPG battles. After each victory, you can breed your champions to form the next lineup. While official sales figures are still under wraps, it’s clear the numbers are impressive. Just three hours post-launch, the development budget was already recouped, and by Friday, 650,000 players had jumped into the game, translating to over $12 million in revenue after Steam’s cut.
There was also a thrilling moment when Mewgenics outperformed Hades 2 in player count.
This level of success indicates a solid budget and a dedicated audience, paving the way for a console release. While specific details are yet to be announced, the game’s compatibility with controllers suggests it will be a great fit for Xbox, PS5, and Switch. It’s also surprising that a mobile version isn’t already in the works, as it seems like an ideal platform.
The game’s popularity also means that DLC is on the horizon, which is exciting considering the core experience is so expansive that many players have yet to complete it.
Mewgenics updates: – OST is live on the Steam page – Console release is coming (more updates later) – DLC is in development – Bug fixes are on the way – Mewgenics merch available
Not to be overlooked, the OST features an impressive 82 tracks, with only 27 being instrumentals. This means players can enjoy all the quirky songs that accompany their adventures, even if they haven’t reached the second act.
