Mewgenics Team Recoups Costs in Just 3 Hours, Celebrates with Cat-Themed Cake

Mewgenics, the latest creation from indie developers Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel, known for their acclaimed roguelike, has made a remarkable debut by selling over 250,000 copies within just 12 hours.

Glaiel shared a tweet featuring a post from 2023 where he mentioned that reaching this sales figure would define Mewgenics as a success. Earlier reports indicated that the game had already surpassed 150,000 copies sold in just six hours, while McMillen’s previous record was set with The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, which sold 40,000 copies in its first day.

This impressive milestone came shortly after Glaiel announced that the team recouped their development costs within three hours. Considering the game was first revealed in 2012, this is a significant achievement, especially given its rocky history of being put on hold in 2014, canceled in 2016, and then revived two years later.

To commemorate the occasion, Glaiel posted a fun photo of himself and McMillen celebrating with a cat-shaped cake, complete with replica awards and gold medals. At the time of this update, Mewgenics had reached a peak player count of nearly 66,000 on Steam, making it the top-selling game on the platform.

The game has also garnered critical acclaim, boasting a Metacritic score of 89 based on 38 reviews. One review describes Mewgenics as “a charmingly churlish game” that promises players years of entertainment, even labeling it as a potential “first GOTY contender” for 2026.
