Mewgenics, the latest roguelike from the creator of The Binding of Isaac, has already unlocked more than a third of Isaac’s achievements, despite being 11 years and three expansions behind.
Edmund McMillen has sent a chill down the spines of gamers everywhere with a recent social media post revealing that Mewgenics will launch with a staggering 280 achievements on Steam.
Originally announced back in 2012, Mewgenics is set to finally hit the scene on February 10, 2026. After its cancellation in 2016, the game was rebooted in 2018, and since then, McMillen has been building excitement, calling it his magnum opus. He noted that The Binding of Isaac, often hailed as one of the greatest roguelikes ever, was merely a “basic roguelike” that served as a warm-up for him to dive into the genre. McMillen recently teased that players might encounter “a turn-based game with cats,” while also describing Mewgenics as “very D&D.”
In a recent tweet, McMillen shared a screenshot simply stating, “number of achievements: 280,” without any additional context.
To put that into perspective, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, which has been around for over 11 years and has received three expansions (with another currently in open Beta), boasts 641 achievements. The fact that Mewgenics will have over a third of that at launch is quite daunting.
As someone who has logged 258 hours in The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth and only managed to unlock 359 achievements—about 56%—the thought of completing Mewgenics feels overwhelming. Plus, considering McMillen’s previous comments about potential DLCs, that achievement count is likely to increase even further.
McMillen has also remarked on how AAA titles allow indie games to take bold risks, only for the mainstream to later “grab what worked” and “cash in” in a more conventional manner.
