Mewgenics, the latest roguelike tactical RPG from Tyler Glaiel and Edmund McMillen (the creative force behind Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac), has just set a new player record on Steam, surpassing Hades 2. The developers are optimistic about challenging even more legendary roguelike titles.
According to SteamDB, Mewgenics reached 115,428 concurrent players just days after its launch. Glaiel highlighted on Twitter that this achievement puts it ahead of Hades 2’s previous record by over 2,000 players, which peaked at 112,947 shortly after its Early Access release last September.
Earlier, Glaiel mentioned that Mewgenics had surpassed Vampire Survivors’ peak, noting that he was informed Hades 2 was the only roguelike with a higher peak. However, SteamDB’s rankings reveal that several games still hold the top spots, including last year’s indie sensation Megabonk, the PvP roguelite Skillshot City, and FromSoftware’s Elden Ring Nightreign.
With Megabonk’s peak at 117,336 concurrent players, it’s the next target for Mewgenics. Glaiel remarked, “Got within 2k today. There’s usually a second peak later, and tomorrow is a holiday, so it’s possible!”
We’ll be keeping an eye on this as the hours pass to see if Mewgenics can maintain its momentum. Additionally, McMillen has confirmed that a console port of Mewgenics is in the works, which will likely expand its already growing player base significantly.
Animal Crossing may have retired Mr. Resetti, but his fiery spirit lives on in Mewgenics, which isn’t shy about calling you out for save scumming.
