Miami Aims to Transform into a Real-Life GTA 6, Sparking Police Concerns
Set in the fictional American state of Leonida, Grand Theft Auto 6 features a sprawling map that draws inspiration from various parts of Florida. This connection has sparked excitement in Florida’s tourism sector, as the game’s anticipated success could be a boon for local businesses. However, some government officials aiming to leverage this enthusiasm are encountering resistance from law enforcement.
In late August 2026, local officials in Miami-Dade crafted a proposal for a potential collaboration with the game’s developer. The plan included a marketing strategy that would envelop the city in GTA-themed advertisements, starting right at the Miami airport. Ideas ranged from GTA-themed baggage claim areas and luggage carts to eye-catching signage throughout the airport. Once visitors arrive in the city, they could experience GTA-inspired art installations, Vice City-themed manhole covers, and displays that highlight the real-life inspirations behind the game. The proposal even suggested a family-friendly car event themed around the open-world experience.
As of now, Rockstar has not approved this proposal, and its future remains uncertain. Shortly after the pitch was made public, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office voiced strong opposition. Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz publicly criticized the idea of partnering with a game that glorifies criminal behavior.
“Its fictional world includes murder, robbery, drug trafficking, carjacking, violence against law enforcement, and other conduct that the men and women of the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office work every single day to prevent,” Cordero-Stutz stated. While some local officials echoed her concerns, a few recognized the potential economic advantages the initiative could offer.
Additionally, the Sheriff’s Office is currently pursuing a 12% increase to its $1.2 billion budget for 2027, which would ultimately be funded by taxpayers. The original Miami-Dade proposal suggested that Rockstar could financially support the promotion, potentially alleviating some government expenses. In 2025, Miami-Dade managed to address a $400 million funding shortfall by raising water and sewage fees for residents and cutting funding to a program that assisted residents in obtaining U.S. citizenship.
Fans of GTA 6 are curious whether the characters Jason and Lucia will control similarly to John Marston from Red Dead Redemption 2.
