Michael B. Jordan to Direct Upcoming Battlefield Movie
Michael B. Jordan is set to bring the Battlefield franchise to the silver screen. Reports indicate that he, alongside Mission: Impossible director Christopher McQuarrie, is spearheading a film adaptation of the popular military shooter series from Electronic Arts. The duo is currently pitching the project to studios, including Apple and Sony Pictures.
McQuarrie is expected to take on writing, directing, and producing duties for the Battlefield film, while Jordan will produce and may also star in the project. EA is involved as a producer as well. However, details regarding the film’s plot and setting remain under wraps.
This announcement follows closely on the heels of Activision and Paramount revealing a release date for their live-action adaptation of Call of Duty, a franchise that has been a staple in the gaming world since its inception in 2003. Interestingly, back in 2016, Paramount attempted to adapt Battlefield into a television series while DICE was exploring a World War I theme for the game.
The latest entry in the Battlefield series, Battlefield 6, achieved significant success for EA, becoming the best-selling game of 2025 in the U.S., according to market research data. This marked a historic moment, as it was the first time a new Battlefield title topped the annual sales charts, a title usually claimed by its rival, Call of Duty.
The franchise began with Battlefield 1942 in 2002, set during World War II. It distinguished itself from other first-person shooters with its innovative team-based mechanics and a blend of infantry and vehicle combat. The series is also known for its memorable player-generated moments, such as the iconic “RendeZook” trick shot from Battlefield 3, where a player ejects from a jet, takes down an enemy aircraft with a rocket launcher, and lands back in their original plane—definitely a stunt that would catch the eye of McQuarrie.
Over the years, Battlefield has explored various settings and time periods, including WWI, WWII, the Vietnam War, and futuristic conflicts.
The Battlefield film is part of a growing trend of video game adaptations in Hollywood, following the success of films like Minecraft and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Other projects in the works include adaptations of Death Stranding and Elden Ring by A24, Street Fighter by Legendary, and a new take on Resident Evil by Constantin Film, directed by Zach Cregger. Even Roblox is getting in on the action, with multiple movies based on its platform in development.
While Jordan hasn’t starred in a video game movie yet, he has lent his voice to various games, including his role as Adonis Creed in boxing titles, and appeared in Wilson’s Heart, NBA 2K17, and Gears of War 3. He also has experience in military action films, having played U.S. Navy SEAL John Clark in Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse, setting the stage for his involvement in this new venture.
