Microsoft addresses storage issues with Windows 11 folder cleanup.
Microsoft is tackling a Windows 11 issue that has led to a folder consuming several gigabytes of storage. As noted earlier, the fix was included in the optional June 2026 update (KB5095093), which aims to “improve disk space usage for the CapabilityAccessManager.db-wal file.”
This file, which is automatically installed on Windows 11 systems, is tied to app permissions. Many users have reported problems with it over the past few months, with one individual noting that it ballooned to 500GB on their device. Others have seen the file swell to similarly excessive sizes, ranging from 12GB to 200GB.
While Microsoft hasn’t detailed the root cause, it’s suggested that the file’s growth may be due to Windows 11 continuously logging repeated events related to access requests or privacy controls, such as location tracking.
If you’re experiencing this problem, you can install the update by navigating to your Settings menu, selecting “Windows Update” > Advanced options, and then clicking “Check for optional updates.” From there, you can choose to install the June 2026 update.
