Microsoft’s Project Mara, a Game Exploring Mental Terror, Faces Uncertain Future
Ninja Theory, known for their work on Hellblade, first unveiled Project Mara back in 2020, but it seems the project may not be progressing as initially hoped. This isn’t entirely unexpected, as the game was pitched as an “experimental title that explores new ways of storytelling.” Recently, reporter Jez Corden noted that Project Mara was “only ever a concept” and there was no assurance it would reach the finish line. He mentioned that it could potentially evolve into a game in the future or transform into something entirely different.
When it was first announced, Ninja Theory described Project Mara as a “real-world and grounded representation of mental terror,” aiming to depict the horrors of the mind through real-life experiences and thorough research. The studio emphasized its experimental nature, suggesting it could pave the way for a new storytelling medium.
Looking ahead, Corden indicated that Ninja Theory’s next project might be Hellblade 3, which is expected to be more combat-focused and interactive compared to its predecessors. While the first two Hellblade games were heavily cinematic, appealing to some players while leaving others wanting more gameplay, the upcoming title is set to maintain some of those cinematic elements.
In the broader landscape, Microsoft’s development teams are reportedly busy with a variety of projects, including a StarCraft shooter, Wolfenstein 3, remakes of Fallout 3 and New Vegas, and a new Warcraft game. With 2026 marking the 25th anniversary of Xbox, Microsoft has plans for several celebrations, kicking off on January 22 with the Xbox Developer Direct, which will spotlight Fable and Forza Horizon 6.
