Mike Flanagan Reveals His Vision for The Dark Tower TV Series Adaptation

Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series has always posed a challenge for adaptation due to its intricate multiverse and the expansive narrative spread across multiple lengthy novels. However, Mike Flanagan, known for his work on series like The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass, believes the solution is straightforward: start from the beginning.

In a recent interview, Flanagan shared insights about his upcoming adaptation of The Dark Tower. When asked about the most difficult project he’s tackled, he surprised many by naming Warhammer as the toughest.

Flanagan noted that adapting The Dark Tower isn’t as daunting because King’s storytelling effectively welcomes newcomers. “You do the books. Stephen King is a genius in how he structures The Dark Tower,” he remarked. “It opens with one of the most iconic lines: ‘The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.’ It introduces two characters with a clear goal—one is fleeing, the other is in pursuit—set against a stark desert backdrop. It’s simple yet powerful. From that foundation, King builds an entire universe, piece by piece.”

He further explained the pitfalls of other adaptation attempts, emphasizing that jumping into the story at random points can overwhelm audiences. “King did it right by starting with just two characters and gradually expanding the world,” Flanagan said. His approach will mirror this, focusing on adapting the books in order, starting with the first installment, 1982’s The Gunslinger.

In December 2022, Flanagan announced he had secured the rights to create a television series based on the books. He envisions the show spanning five seasons—one for each of the first five novels—culminating in two films that will adapt the final two books. The series will be produced by Flanagan’s Intrepid Pictures and is part of his ongoing collaboration with Prime Video.

Regarding the delays in production, Flanagan explained that the legal complexities arise from The Dark Tower’s connections to other Stephen King works, making rights acquisition a challenging process. “We’re still making progress. It’s a massive undertaking,” he stated. While a 2017 film adaptation featuring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey exists, fans will have to be patient for Roland the Gunslinger’s return to the screen.
