Mike Flanagan is preparing for his fifth adaptation of a Stephen King work, this time offering a fresh perspective on The Mist.

According to reports, Flanagan will both direct and write the screenplay, with Warner Bros. producing alongside his Red Room and Spyglass Entertainment.

The Mist, originally a novella by King from 1980, tells the story of David Drayton, who seeks refuge in a supermarket as a thick mist envelops the small town of Bridgton, Maine. Within the fog lurk monstrous creatures that prey on humans, leading to widespread panic among the townsfolk.

Interestingly, there has only been one theatrical adaptation of The Mist, which was released in 2007. Directed by the acclaimed Frank Darabont, known for films like The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption, this version notably altered the book’s ending to something far more tragic, often cited in discussions of the saddest and best horror movie endings. A TV adaptation premiered on Hulu in 2017 but was canceled after just one season.

Flanagan’s journey with King began with the sequel to The Shining, Doctor Sleep, followed by Netflix’s Gerald’s Game and The Life of Chuck. He recently completed filming a limited series adaptation of Carrie, set to release in 2026.

The Mist currently does not have a release date. For more information, explore our guide to the most anticipated upcoming horror films or check out the expanding list of upcoming adaptations of Stephen King’s works.
