Minecraft Introduces Its First New Dimension Since Version 1.0
Following recent layoffs and studio changes at Xbox, Mojang hosted a Minecraft Live showcase where they made several exciting announcements about the beloved franchise. While there was no sneak peek at the upcoming movie, Mojang did unveil a significant addition to Minecraft: the Sift dimension from Minecraft Dungeons 2 is set to make its debut in the survival crafting game next year. This marks the first new dimension added to Minecraft since its official release in 2011.
During the Minecraft Live event, Mojang provided a glimpse of the Sift, confirming its arrival in both Minecraft Java Edition and Minecraft Bedrock Edition in 2027. Before that, players will experience the Sift in Minecraft Dungeons 2, an action-RPG spin-off reminiscent of Diablo, launching on September 29. The Sift appears to be an ethereal, spirit-like dimension based on the showcase.
Currently, Minecraft features three well-known dimensions: the Overworld, the Nether, and the End. By the time the game transitioned out of public alpha and beta testing in November 2011, all three dimensions were already included. Over the past 15 years, Mojang has focused on expanding the content within these existing dimensions rather than introducing new ones, but that will finally change next year.
In addition to the new dimension, Mojang revealed that the upcoming game update will introduce ice caves as a new underground biome. In these ice caves, players will encounter the new Frozen Zombie mob, craft ice balls used by these enemies, and mine ice crystals.
Sound Effects packs are also on the way to the Minecraft Marketplace by the end of the year. Additionally, it was announced that Chessington World of Adventures will feature a Minecraft World theme park, complete with a coaster named Escape the Nether, set to open alongside a Minecraft-themed hotel in 2027.
The showcase also included a community challenge announcement for Wilderness Bound and a teaser for a more comprehensive “creator platform” aimed at those who produce in-game Minecraft content.
Lastly, Mojang confirmed that Minecraft will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 27, further expanding the game’s already extensive platform availability. It’s an exciting time to be a Minecraft enthusiast, with new adventures on the horizon. Players will journey to the new dimension on September 29.
