Minecraft’s Baby Mobs Get a Cute Makeover – You Have to See Them!

Hey, Minecraft devs! Huge fan here! I just have to ask, how could you do this to us? It’s January, motivation is at an all-time low, and now I could be spending my time with a bunch of adorable animals in your blocky universe instead of facing reality. It’s downright scandalous. A fluffy, charming scandal.

Putting my existential thoughts aside, the latest Minecraft update is all about making our favorite critters even cuter. Eight farm animals are getting their own baby versions, currently in testing. You might be thinking, “Didn’t they already do that?” Yes, but those were just scaled-down adult models. Now we’re getting actual baby rabbits, wolf pups, kittens, and more.

“Typically, mobs in Minecraft have two-pixel eyes, but baby mobs now have just one, which gives them a whole new vibe that’s just adorable,” says game director Agnes Larsson in an official update. You’re absolutely right, Larsson; it’s just too cute.

Along with the interactive fluffballs, we’re also getting calves, piglets, chicks, ocelots, and lambs. Each has been redesigned to enhance their cuteness and show a clear growth from baby to adult. They even have unique sounds! The lamb design sparked some interesting discussions internally.

“Initially, I created a fluffy one with a big wool coat, but it didn’t make sense for gameplay,” shares Sarah Boeving, a game artist on Minecraft. “It looked like it could be sheared like the adults (which it can’t), and it didn’t really reflect real-life lambs accurately. It was a tough decision, but I’m really pleased with the final baby sheep.”

I’m thrilled with them too, especially the chicks that are just little yellow cubes. You can even give them individual names! But it’s the rabbits that have truly captured my heart. “I really hope players enjoy watching the new rabbit (both adult and baby!) hopping around,” Boeving adds.

“I’m particularly fond of the ‘toast’ variant and the story behind it,” she continues. “It was added a while back to honor a player’s missing pet. There’s something really special about being able to keep the memory of loved ones alive in games.”

You can dive into all this cuteness now using the snapshot feature and Bedrock beta/preview in Minecraft. Enjoy!
