Mister Organ: A Deep Dive into One of the Most Disturbing Documentaries Ever

Mister Organ may not reach the chilling depths of societal horror found in The Act of Killing or the unsettling blend of creepypasta and true crime seen in Beware the Slenderman, but it certainly delivers a deeply disturbing look at Michael Organ and his personal reign of terror against anyone who crosses his path.

This documentary, crafted by journalist David Farrier from Auckland, New Zealand, kicks off with Farrier investigating Bashford Antiques, a Ponsonby shop notorious for aggressively clamping cars in its lot and demanding outrageous fees for their release—sometimes as high as $760. His reporting ultimately spurred the government to enact legislation banning such extreme clamping fees.

Under typical circumstances, that would wrap up the tale. However, the story takes a dark turn with Michael Organ, a bizarre and seemingly dangerous conman at its center.

Organ was brought in to manage the parking lot at Bashford’s, and as Farrier digs deeper, he uncovers that Organ is far more than just a parking enforcer. Years prior, he faced charges for attempting to steal a yacht in a convoluted scheme. To add to the absurdity, he falsely claims to be both a prince and a lawyer—neither of which is true.

As Farrier interviews those who have encountered Organ and engages with him directly, a portrait of a deeply troubled individual emerges, one who has left a path of traumatized victims behind. The film shifts from a wild depiction of a conman to something far more sinister when Organ ominously reveals that he has obtained a key to Farrier’s home, cautioning him to be careful.

Things escalate from there; ultimately, Farrier feels compelled to leave the country to escape Organ’s relentless harassment and gaslighting. This documentary stands out as a rare blend of investigative journalism and psychological horror.

Mister Organ is available for streaming on Hoopla, Kanopy, and YouTube.
