Miyamoto Discusses Nintendo’s Focus on Remaking Classics Like Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Nintendo icon Shigeru Miyamoto has shared insights on the company’s strategy of remaking classic titles during a recent interview. He argues that these remakes are essential for keeping beloved franchises alive and ensuring that new entries continue to emerge.
Nintendo has a long history of revamping its older games for newer consoles, dating back to the Game Boy Advance. The original Switch launched with a lineup that heavily featured ports from the Wii U, which many players had missed. Now, as the Switch 2 approaches its first year, the focus has shifted to iconic titles like Star Fox and the upcoming Zelda: Ocarina of Time, reinforcing the idea that Nintendo is becoming a hub for remakes.
In his discussion, Miyamoto emphasized the importance of capturing the attention of gamers, noting that many players may drift away from gaming after a few years. He pointed out that younger audiences often miss out on games from a decade ago, making remakes a valuable way to reintroduce these classics. He stated, “Some people might say there are a lot of remakes, but after five years, a lot of people have outgrown games and stop playing them. Young people today don’t have the opportunity to play games from 10 years ago, so remaking them to be more playable and releasing them again is a good way to meet the demand.”
While it’s true that access to older games can be a challenge for younger players, one might argue that the solution isn’t always high-budget remakes. Improved support for legacy hardware and ensuring that purchased games remain accessible could be more effective, rather than pursuing legal action against those trying to preserve gaming history.
Miyamoto also mentioned that introducing players to original games can pave the way for future developments, which the company has been actively pursuing.
If this approach holds true, it could bode well for fans. There’s been a strong demand for new original Star Fox content for years, and it’s becoming increasingly noticeable that there hasn’t been any news on a new mainline Zelda since 2023’s Tears of the Kingdom, nor any updates on a Super Mario Odyssey sequel nearly a decade after its release.
