Modder Takes a Shot at Competitor Over Unofficial Donkey Kong 64 PC Port: “They’re Just Vibe Coding and Not Doing It Well”
Recompilations of classic games are gaining traction online, making it easier than ever to enjoy retro titles on PC. For fans of Donkey Kong 64, there’s exciting news: a new project is underway to bring this iconic N64 platformer to PC without any AI-driven “vibe coding.”
On June 28, YouTuber 2dos released a brief trailer for Donkey Kong 64: Recompiled, a fan-made PC port of the original 1999 game. This recompiled version is being developed using Wiseguy’s N64 recompilation tool, which allows developers to convert N64 games for PC. The upcoming port promises widescreen support, high framerates, 4K resolution options, improved minigames for smoother gameplay, minimal input lag, and mod support.
To play DK64: Recompiled, you’ll need to own a copy of the original game, as this version won’t include any assets from the N64 release. This is also why legal action from Nintendo has been limited against these tools and projects.
The team behind Donkey Kong 64: Recompiled is the same group responsible for the well-known Donkey Kong 64 Randomizer mod, boasting extensive experience with the classic 3D platformer. They’ve emphasized that they are not using AI tools for this recompilation. In fact, they announced the project ahead of its release to clarify that their version is not reliant on AI coding, as one of the developers explained on Reddit.
“Unfortunately, the [DK64] recomp comes with a special case where we have a competitor who is vibe coding their way through, and doing a very poor job of it,” said developer theballaam96. “We want to make it clear that we’re creating a recomp of actual quality before our competitor releases their subpar version and builds infrastructure around it.”
In their Discord server, the developers elaborated on their decision to take on this project despite another developer attempting a similar AI-assisted recompilation.
We chose to lead this development due to the poor direction of another DK64 recompilation project that heavily relies on AI vibe coding, resulting in a low-quality product that will become increasingly difficult to manage over time. Our DK64 recompilation is supported by individuals who have been working with the DK64 code for over a decade and do not depend on vibe coding for modifications.
Vibe coding, where developers instruct AI tools on what to program and then refine the code with additional AI assistance, has become popular in some recompilation efforts. The PC Gaming Wiki even had to implement a rule banning these projects due to their instability and unreliability. As of June 29, the only DK64 recompilation listed on PCGW is DK64: Recompiled.
