Modders Integrate All of Morrowind into Fallout 4’s Pip-Boy Experience

Fallout 4 is a solid title, but for many fans, it represents the shift where Bethesda transitioned from crafting the deep RPGs they cherished to focusing on projects like Starfield. Fortunately, a skilled modder has found a way to bring one of Bethesda’s classic RPGs, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, into Fallout 4 through the game’s PipBoy.

As highlighted by an outlet, modder RPGKing117 has dedicated weeks to getting a specially modified version of the open-source Morrowind port (OpenMW) operational within Fallout 4’s PipBoy. After countless hours of troubleshooting, the modder has successfully made it happen. The mod is now available for PC, and you can check out a video demonstration by RPGKing117 showcasing gameplay of Morrowind on a computer inside Fallout 4. This mod allows you to experience the classic RPG on both the PipBoy and any in-game PC capable of running holotapes.

The mechanics behind this mod are straightforward, though setting it up can be a bit tricky. According to the modder, OpenMW operates in a “hidden window locked to 876×700, which gets upscaled” and streamed directly into Fallout 4 in real time. A custom Fallout 4 Script Extender plugin manages much of the heavy lifting, enabling players to use a keyboard and mouse to navigate one game while immersed in another.

To get this running on your PC, you’ll need copies of both Fallout 4 and Morrowind, along with F4SE already installed. The mod includes OpenMW, so there’s no need to worry about that. Just follow the straightforward instructions, and you’ll soon be adventuring in Morrowind amidst the irradiated wasteland of the Commonwealth. Just a heads-up: you’ll need to run both games simultaneously, so it’s best not to attempt this on an older or less powerful device like a Steam Deck.

And for those curious, RPGKing117 has confirmed they are also working on a similar mod that will allow players to experience the original Fallout on the Fallout 4 PipBoy. While it’s still in progress, the modder is making strides on this exciting project.
