Modding Community Keeps Hope Alive for Last of Us 2 Multiplayer Two Years After Cancellation
A modder known for their work on titles like The Last of Us and God of War is diving into the creation of a multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part 2, two years after the official multiplayer spin-off was scrapped by the developers. This project was halted four years into its development, despite receiving high praise from the team, with one developer even calling it “the highlight of my career.”
The cancellation of the online installment in The Last of Us series was partly due to Naughty Dog’s decision to redirect their focus toward their next major single-player title, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Following the announcement, the PC modding community began exploring the potential for adding multiplayer features to the existing The Last of Us games.
While no one has successfully implemented online multiplayer for The Last of Us yet, one modder is making strides in that direction. Recently, they shared a tweet featuring a brief video showcasing multiplayer functionality in The Last of Us Part 2, although it currently only supports local play.
The modder hasn’t committed to a timeline for completion, if it happens at all, but the video demonstrates progress with two independent players controlling separate Ellies. They mentioned, “I don’t know if this will turn out to be anything,” but they have managed to spawn two distinct players in the same game.
It’s still early in the development process, but it seems they are investigating the feasibility of transforming this into a full online multiplayer mod for PC. While the second Ellie’s movements aren’t perfectly smooth, it’s a promising start and definitely something to watch as it evolves.
