Modern Warfare 4 Addresses Call of Duty’s ‘Clowny Skins’ Issue

Fans of Call of Duty are finally getting one of their most sought-after features (and no, it’s not the removal of skill-based matchmaking). Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will roll out a new Operator Skin toggle in its first season, allowing players to disable the quirky skins that have been a point of contention for quite some time. Additionally, the developers are catering to those who appreciate the previous skins by introducing a Carry Forward feature, enabling players to transfer content they’ve earned or purchased in earlier titles.

The announcement showcases the feature in action, clarifying that when the toggle is activated, any skins from past Call of Duty games will revert to the default operator appearance. This setting only affects your game and not others, and it will be off by default. However, there’s a catch: this change will only apply to Call of Duty: Warzone and won’t impact any new skins introduced with Modern Warfare 4. For those unfamiliar, Warzone is the franchise’s battle royale mode, featured in several entries, including Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3, Black Ops 6, and Black Ops 7.

While this toggle is exclusive to Warzone, Infinity Ward has assured players that Modern Warfare 4 will not feature “clowny” crossover skins. “No Lady Gaga. No Omni-Man. No Teletubbies. No SpongeBob. Keep the receipts,” stated the Call of Duty Community Teams account on X.

In recent titles, Call of Duty has increasingly embraced crossover skins, some of which are downright absurd: Godzilla, Gundam mechs, and Beavis and Butt-Head have appeared alongside celebrities like Kevin Durant and Nicki Minaj. As these skins carry over into Warzone, the ridiculousness has only intensified.

Although previous Call of Duty games have made similar promises about avoiding silly skins only to backtrack, Infinity Ward is making a concerted effort to distance itself from the cosmetic choices of past titles. This shift seems aimed at winning back the core fanbase, especially after Black Ops 7 was the least popular entry in a long time. Meanwhile, Xbox, which owns the franchise, has faced challenges, having laid off over 1,800 employees recently. Microsoft is clearly eager for Modern Warfare 4 to succeed, having already hosted several open betas to attract players, while continuing its trend of casting well-known actors for villain roles (this time featuring Mads Mikkelsen). We’ll see if the company holds true to its commitment of “no clowny skins” when Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, 2026.

The series is making a strong comeback.
