Modern Warfare 4 Introduces New Feature to Hide Unwanted Skins in Warzone

When Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 drops this October, it’s set to introduce a highly anticipated feature to the beloved battle royale mode, Warzone. For the first time in the franchise’s history, players will have the ability to toggle the visibility of cosmetic items from previous Call of Duty titles, including some of the more outlandish crossover skins.

On September 24, it was revealed that a new “Operator Skin toggle” will be implemented in Warzone with the launch of Modern Warfare 4’s first season. The announcement also confirmed that the “Carry Forward” feature will remain, allowing players to transfer previously earned skins and cosmetics from earlier Call of Duty games into Warzone. Now, players who prefer not to see those quirky, sometimes absurd skins can simply turn them off during gameplay.

When this new skin toggle is activated, any operators or skins from past Call of Duty games, such as those from Black Ops 6, will be replaced on your screen with default cosmetics that fit Modern Warfare 4. This change will affect enemy players, friends, and squadmates both in matches and in the lobby.

Importantly, this feature won’t hide your own unique skins. For instance, if you’re sporting Stan from American Dad from a previous title and join a Warzone session with the toggle enabled, other players will see you as a generic soldier, while you’ll still see yourself as Stan.

By default, this toggle will be turned off.

“Over the last few years, Call of Duty: Warzone has brought together Operators, weapons, and experiences from across recent Call of Duty titles in one shared experience,” the announcement stated. “We know some players enjoy that variety, while others would prefer Call of Duty: Warzone to feel more aligned with the world of the latest release, including the upcoming Modern Warfare 4. With the launch of the next chapter of Call of Duty: Warzone, we aim to support both player preferences.”

This statement subtly acknowledges the long-standing feedback from fans regarding crossover skins and quirky cosmetics. Both Battlefield and Call of Duty have faced scrutiny over the inclusion of silly skins. However, this is the first time either franchise has introduced a skin toggle, a feature fans have long requested, though many believed it wouldn’t be implemented due to concerns about diminishing the value of skins if they could be turned off. It appears that the developers have reconsidered, likely motivated by the need to recover from the missteps of last year’s Black Ops 7 and a general sense of franchise fatigue.

The big question now is: What if Modern Warfare 4 introduces some goofy skins? The announcement only implies that MW4 skins will be compatible with the toggle. I’ve reached out for more details on how the filter will function if MW4 includes a whimsical skin like Stan from American Dad. While it has been claimed that such skins won’t be part of MW4, promises can be broken, so we’ll have to wait and see.
