Monster Hunter Wilds Ascendance Enhances Endgame Experience with Master Ranks for Greater Challenge and Depth

It’s been almost two years since the launch of Monster Hunter Wilds, and the developers have been diligently enhancing the game following a somewhat rocky start. Despite its initial challenges, including criticism for the PC version’s optimization and a reduction in the series’ traditional difficulty, Wilds has become a major success, thanks to ongoing updates and events. Now, with the upcoming Ascendance expansion, the team is set to elevate the game even further.

The Ascendance expansion was unveiled at the Tokyo Game Show 2026, where the core creative team shared insights on the transformative upgrades and quality-of-life enhancements it will introduce. Slated for release in 2027, the developers are eager to reveal what players can expect and how the first two years of Monster Hunter Wilds have shaped their approach.

“Throughout the development of Monster Hunter Wilds, we received extensive feedback from a diverse player base—ranging from newcomers to seasoned veterans of the series,” said the series producer. “Our entire team has been analyzing that feedback and striving to meet the community’s expectations for the future of Monster Hunter Wilds. We’re applying the lessons learned not only to updates for Wilds but also to our upcoming expansion, Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance.”

The new story campaign for Ascendance takes place several years after the events of Wilds, focusing on the hunters’ guild as they work to restore the Windward Plains. Following the return of the elder dragon Lao-Shan Lung, which devastates the guild base, the team returns with enhanced experience and gear to explore the aerial region known as the Skybound Eyrie, confront more formidable monsters, and tackle new threats to reclaim the lands above and below.

What sets Ascendance apart from previous expansions like Iceborne or Sunbreak is its potential to revitalize the game. According to the game director, Ascendance aims to be a significant leap forward for Monster Hunter Wilds.

“To put it simply, the concept behind Ascendance is a true evolution of Monster Hunter Wilds,” the game director explained. “While Wilds serves as the foundation, we want to build on what worked well while thoroughly improving areas that needed enhancement, as well as addressing player requests. Our goal is to create an overall experience that appeals to an even broader audience.”

In addition to the new Skybound Eyrie location, which features more vertical and visually intricate terrain compared to the Windward Plains and Scarlett Forest, players can look forward to a host of new hunts, gear to craft, and monsters to battle. To help tackle these tougher foes, including the Araketa and its coordinated minions, players can utilize the new Boost Bracer ability, available in the Ascendance campaign.

With the Boost Bracer, hunters can unleash a powerful attack with their chosen weapon, along with a temporary boost phase that enhances their combos and strikes. While it may not be a direct equivalent to the Devil Trigger from another franchise, it shares a similar concept of supercharging players for a limited time. The boosted attacks add an exciting layer to the familiar combat, allowing teams to execute impressive, anime-inspired moves that can really pack a punch. This addition is sure to spark discussions among fans about its place in the Monster Hunter experience.

Another significant improvement highlighted by the developers is the introduction of a more challenging endgame for Monster Hunter Wilds. One of the main critiques of the base game was its streamlined difficulty and overly generous resources that made some encounters feel trivial. Ascendance aims to refresh these encounters while also reintroducing the Master Rank difficulty, which offers the most intense challenges for veteran players.

“We understand that we’ve received a variety of feedback regarding aspects like difficulty and endgame content,” the game director noted. “With Ascendance, we’re introducing a new quest rank, Master Rank, and we want to ensure it delivers the level of challenge and depth players expect. As players progress and face tougher quests, we want to inspire them to think, ‘I want to craft that armor,’ or ‘I want to create a set with this element,’ and then use it to tackle the next level of difficulty. We want players to fully engage with the core Monster Hunter gameplay loop. Additionally, we plan to offer endgame content that allows players to truly test their skills with the gear they’ve worked hard to obtain.”

The Ascendance expansion appears poised to give Monster Hunter Wilds a significant boost. With its focus on endgame content, it suggests a commitment to creating a more rewarding experience for those who have already explored Wilds’ expansive world. The return of elder dragons and other iconic Monster Hunter creatures like Teostra and Khezu could be just what the game needs to reach new heights.
