More Dragons on the Way in House of the Dragon, Teases Showrunner

If there’s one thing that *House of the Dragon* excels at, it’s showcasing a variety of dragons and their riders. This focus is fitting, given that the series revolves around the Targaryen civil war, famously known as the Dance of the Dragons.

Since the conflict between the Blacks and Greens ignited, there’s been a reluctance to unleash dragons against each other. By season 3, these majestic creatures have transformed into weapons of mass destruction: the more dragons you command, the less likely your foes will dare to challenge you. This was precisely Rhaenyra Targaryen’s (Emma D’Arcy) strategy when she, Daemon Targaryen, and her dragonseeds seized King’s Landing after learning that Aemon Targaryen had departed for Harrenhal with Vhagar, the mightiest dragon still in existence.

Despite the numerous dragons featured in the series, several from George R.R. Martin’s *Fire & Blood*—a historical account of the Targaryen dynasty—have yet to make an appearance, including Grey Ghost and The Cannibal. *Fire & Blood* suggests that The Cannibal, a fierce and untamed creature that made his home on Dragonstone, might even predate Vhagar. Grey Ghost also lived on Dragonstone but was known for being elusive and shunning human contact. So far, only The Cannibal has been referenced in *House of the Dragon*, but with his existence acknowledged, could he and other dragons show up in future episodes? Or is it safer to assume they won’t be featured after all?

In a conversation with an outlet, *House of the Dragon* showrunner Ryan Condal discussed these possibilities.

“I think assumption and expectation are probably dangerous words to use in this particular world,” Condal remarked. “No, look, there’s a lot of runway left, and it is called *House of the Dragon*. It is The Dance of the Dragons. I think there are more dragon cards to be turned over as time rolls on here.”

While this isn’t a definitive promise that The Cannibal or Grey Ghost will appear, Condal’s comments do suggest that more dragons are in the mix—a thrilling prospect for fans eager to see even more of these iconic creatures. However, considering the fates that befall many dragons by the end of the Dance of the Dragons, the introduction of additional dragons might prove to be more of a curse than a blessing.
