Mortal Shell 2’s PS5 Physical Editions Are Flying Off Shelves, Fans Urge Sony to Pay Attention

With just about a month to go until launch, special edition physical copies of Mortal Shell 2 are already hard to find. The demand for the steel-case disc version on PlayStation 5 is so high that the developers have issued apologies to fans who may miss out when it releases in August. This situation highlights the ongoing importance of physical games for dedicated enthusiasts.

“Demand for the PlayStation 5-exclusive physical Revered Edition of Mortal Shell 2 has exceeded expectations, and unfortunately, supply across several retailers has been fully reserved, meaning that in many markets, fans are unable to pre-purchase a copy of the game,” the developers announced on social media. “We sincerely apologize if you were planning on pre-ordering the Revered Edition and it is no longer available in your area.”

Mortal Shell 2, the sequel to the 2020 action-RPG from Cold Symmetry, is set to launch on August 20. While the game will be available digitally on both console and PC, many die-hard fans are eager to snag the Revered Edition, which includes a physical art book and other extras. Priced at $70, it stands in contrast to the digital version’s $50, and it’s clear that many are willing to pay the premium. Copies of the Revered Edition are already being listed for significantly more on resale sites.

While it’s unlikely that the developers will shift their strategy for smaller but passionate fanbases around double AA titles, there will still be a standard physical version of Mortal Shell 2 available for those who want it on launch day. However, as discussions around the decline of disc-based games continue, especially with the upcoming PS6, Mortal Shell 2 is being cited as a prime example of why physical copies still hold value.

“This is ultimately how I thought physical media was going to go,” noted a research and insights director. “Limited edition physical discs priced higher than the standard digital-only base game. While this is primarily a supply issue rather than a demand one, it demonstrates that this model is effective and could continue to thrive.”
