MrBeast Collaborates with James Patterson, Discovering the Excitement of Books
Just before summer wraps up, MrBeast (aka Jimmy Donaldson) is set to join a prestigious lineup that includes Oscar-winner Viola Davis, 10-time Grammy winner Dolly Parton, and former President Bill Clinton. Donaldson has teamed up with renowned thriller author James Patterson to co-write his debut book.
Titled *The Most Dangerous Games*, this highly anticipated release on September 1 is touted as “the book event of the year.” It envisions MrBeast’s YouTube stunt empire as a more dystopian social experiment. Here’s a glimpse of the plot:
In a world teetering on the edge of disaster, one hundred contestants engage in a fierce, high-stakes competition where everything is at stake. The prize? The chance to save humanity — and a billion dollars. The pressure is immense. As players navigate harsh environments and face relentless challenges, they are pushed to their limits, with survival being the only rule.
High-stakes competition? Harsh environments? Relentless challenges? Based on reports from the set of *Beast Games* and the numerous lawsuits against the YouTube creator over the past three years, Donaldson and Patterson’s take on *The Running Man* and *The Hunger Games* doesn’t seem too far from reality.
One thing is certain: unlike many books, *The Most Dangerous Games* is unlikely to disappoint. As Donaldson expressed during the announcement of the cover and release date:
“Growing up, I thought books were boring. As I got into my 20s, I realized I was just reading the wrong ones. They can be thrilling if you find the right match. Writing this book with James — who’s one of the greatest storytellers out there — was a chance to create a story I would have been obsessed with as a kid. I aimed to craft something that would engage young readers and inspire a whole generation to get excited about reading again. I think we succeeded, and I’m really proud of what we created. I hope our fans love it.”
Patterson seems like the ideal collaborator for Donaldson, whose relentless pursuit of fame and success makes him a prolific creator. Patterson, too, is known for his impressive output, writing between 10 to 20 books a year. How does he manage it? In a recent interview, he revealed that he typically begins projects with detailed 50- to 70-page outlines, which he then hands off to a network of co-authors who develop the manuscripts while he takes on the role of a hands-on editor, reviewing pages regularly to refine tone, pacing, and plot.
While it’s unclear how the collaboration between Patterson and Donaldson unfolded for *The Most Dangerous Games*, given Donaldson’s enthusiasm for books, it’s possible Patterson took on a larger share of the writing. However, Donaldson certainly contributed ideas.
“Jimmy Donaldson and I had a clear mission for *The Most Dangerous Games*: to craft the most captivating, surprising, and thrilling story we could to delight our fans,” Patterson stated. “Jimmy has the best storytelling instincts of anyone I’ve worked with, and we had a fantastic time collaborating, exchanging ideas, and enhancing the novel at every turn.”
