Musk plans to release the new X algorithm as open-source next week.
In 2023, the platform known as Twitter opened up parts of its code that influenced what content appeared in user feeds. However, the GitHub repository for this code is significantly outdated, with most files dating back to the initial upload three years prior. Elon Musk has announced that within a week, he will release the new algorithm for X, offering a glimpse into how it operates and potentially explaining why so much of your feed seems to be filled with sensational content.
Musk has a history of promising to open-source elements of X, and while he has delivered on some of those commitments, including Grok-1 in 2024, the current version, Grok-3, has not seen any updates in two years. The timing of this announcement to open-source the X algorithm may raise eyebrows, especially as Musk faces criticism from various corners regarding Grok’s handling of deepfake content.
According to Musk, this upcoming release will encompass “all code used to determine what organic and advertising posts are recommended to users.” He also mentioned that this will be just the beginning, with updates scheduled every four weeks, including developer notes to outline any changes. Given the events of 2023, it’s understandable if some remain skeptical about these promises.
