Naughty Dog is said to be developing a new Uncharted game.

It looks like Nathan Drake isn’t done adventuring just yet. Reports indicate that Naughty Dog is gearing up to revive the Uncharted series once they wrap up their current project, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

Sources suggest that a new Uncharted game is in the works, featuring Nathan Drake in some capacity, though it’s still unclear if he’ll take center stage or just make a cameo appearance. This upcoming title is not a remake and isn’t the rumored retread of Uncharted 1. Following this new installment, Naughty Dog is expected to shift focus to The Last of Us Part III, with two projects from that franchise already in development.

Shaun Escayg, who directed Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, will lead the new Uncharted project. He briefly stepped away from Naughty Dog to serve as Creative Director for Crystal Dynamics’ Marvel’s Avengers, which unfortunately didn’t pan out.

For those who might need a refresher, the last main entry in the Uncharted series, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, launched on May 10, 2016. It was a massive success, receiving widespread acclaim and selling over 18 million copies. The story wrapped up Nathan Drake’s journey, showing him coming to terms with his past as he settled down with Elena Fisher. The ending hinted at a new direction for the series, with their daughter, Cassie, poised to take the lead if the franchise continued.

Following Uncharted 4, The Lost Legacy was released in 2017, proving that the series could thrive beyond Nathan Drake. So, it’s a bit surprising to hear that he’ll be returning in this new sequel, though he might just play a supporting role. In 2023, Naughty Dog president Neil Druckmann mentioned that the studio was “done with Uncharted” and ready to move on, but it seems that stance has changed.

While details remain sparse, it appears that Uncharted 5 is still a ways off. Naughty Dog is set to unveil full gameplay for Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet next year, but a release date hasn’t been confirmed yet. Given the studio’s typical development timeline of four to five years, fans might have to wait until the 2030s for the next Uncharted adventure.
