Naughty Dog is working on two new projects set in The Last of Us universe.
Naughty Dog recently marked The Last of Us Day with a series of exciting events. The highlight was the introduction of clicker-inspired armor for Ghost of Yōtei, alongside giveaways of PlayStation avatars and discounts on the PC versions of both The Last of Us titles. To wrap up the celebrations, studio head Neil Druckmann shared an intriguing update, hinting at new projects in the works related to The Last of Us, though he kept details under wraps.
“We have a couple of very exciting new projects in very early stages,” Druckmann revealed. While he couldn’t elaborate further—typical for high-stakes game development—he did mention that these projects will expand the lore of The Last of Us beyond the narratives of Part 1 and Part 2.
However, there’s still no confirmation regarding a potential Part 3.
Druckmann, who has been in the industry for quite some time, offered little for fans to latch onto; “expand the canon” is broad enough to encompass a variety of possibilities. “The world of The Last of Us means a great deal to us, and we wouldn’t return to it unless we had something meaningful to say. We believe these stories are worth telling,” he stated.
While the prospect of two new The Last of Us projects is thrilling, fans should remain cautious. Naughty Dog previously invested years into a multiplayer The Last of Us game before it was ultimately scrapped. There’s no assurance that these new projects will ever see the light of day.
In addition to the two The Last of Us projects, Naughty Dog is also developing Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, which made its debut at the 2024 Game Awards. Druckmann mentioned that the team is fully focused on Intergalactic, describing it as the studio’s “most ambitious game yet.”
As a result, fans shouldn’t expect any updates on this title until 2027, when the studio plans to unveil Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and provide a proper glimpse into Jordan’s thrilling sci-fi adventure.
If Druckmann’s words hold true, it seems unlikely that a new trailer for Intergalactic will be featured at this year’s upcoming Game Awards. Sony typically hosts State of Play events in February and June, so there’s a chance Intergalactic could make an appearance at one of those next year.
A familiar face is set to reunite with the studio.
