Netflix and Greta Gerwig’s Narnia film pushed to 2027, but there’s a silver lining.
Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, the latest adaptation of C.S. Lewis’s classic, directed by Greta Gerwig, has shifted its release from November 2026 to February 2027, as announced by Netflix. While this delay might be disappointing, there’s a silver lining for moviegoers: Gerwig’s take on the origins of Narnia will enjoy an impressive seven-week theatrical run, a rare move for Netflix.
The film is set to hit IMAX and theaters worldwide on February 12, 2027, with early IMAX screenings starting on February 10, 2027. It will then be available for streaming on Netflix beginning April 2, 2027.
The Magician’s Nephew is the sixth installment in The Chronicles of Narnia series, originally published in 1955. This prequel explores the creation of Narnia by Aslan the lion, delving into the land’s early history set a millennium before the events of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Lewis’s most famous work.
Gerwig expressed her excitement, saying, “I was a child when I first read The Magician’s Nephew, and I fell in love with the gorgeously improbable but completely brilliant concept of a cosmic lion singing the world of Narnia to life. I didn’t know that I would grow up to make films, but a universe built out of music is an idea that always lived in my heart. It is the honor of a lifetime to be asked to imagine it into being. Because of C. S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia, I believed in magic and hidden worlds and adventure. I believed that anywhere could be enchanted and that anyone could be swept up into an epic. That wonder and awe was available to everyone, even ordinary people like me… It transformed me.”
This adaptation marks the first live-action film version of Lewis’s book. Previous adaptations of the series, especially The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, have included a 1967 ITV serial, a 1979 animated film, a 1988 BBC series, and a 2005 live-action film produced by Walden Media and released by Disney and 20th Century. Following Walden’s trilogy, Netflix acquired the rights to C.S. Lewis’s works in 2018.
Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew features a talented cast, including Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Daniel Craig, and Meryl Streep, along with newcomers David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell. Gerwig is both directing and writing the film.
