Netflix confirms the future of The Witcher with season 5 announcement.

Since 2019, fans of The Witcher have experienced a rollercoaster ride as Netflix brought Andrzej Sapkowski’s beloved book series to life through both live-action and animated adaptations. With the fourth season marking a significant shift—Henry Cavill stepping down as Geralt of Rivia and Liam Hemsworth taking over—there’s been a glimmer of hope that the fifth and final season could redeem the series or at least provide a satisfying conclusion to Geralt’s journey.

Unfortunately, the final season of The Witcher has been quietly pushed back.

Initially anticipated for a 2026 release based on Netflix’s promotional materials and filming timelines, season 5 is now set to debut in 2027, as reported in August.

Seasons 4 and 5 were filmed back-to-back, with the showrunner noting that the writers approached them as a single, expansive narrative. They aimed to create a cohesive story about a family reuniting, carefully selecting diverse elements from the source material to enrich the plot.

Season 4, however, faced criticism, receiving some of the lowest reviews in the series’ history, and many fans expressed disappointment following the recasting of Geralt.

The Witcher first premiered on Netflix in 2019, featuring Henry Cavill as Geralt, alongside Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, Freya Allan as Ciri, Eamon Farren as Cahir, and Joey Batey as Jaskier. Cavill departed the series in 2022, with Hemsworth stepping into the role.

Meanwhile, Cavill is now focused on adapting the Warhammer 40,000 franchise for Prime Video.

For fans of The Witcher, there’s still plenty to look forward to, including CD Projekt Red’s upcoming The Witcher 4, which will feature Ciri as the main character and is set to launch a new trilogy of games. Additionally, the recently released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered offers an updated experience of the acclaimed RPG.
