Netflix to Finally Shut Down Its Long-Overlooked PS3 App

Anyone firing up Netflix on an old PlayStation 3 today is greeted with a rather disheartening message. The streaming app, which has been around for about 15 years, is set to shut down next month. Farewell, PS3.

On February 3, a Reddit user shared a snapshot of a TV screen displaying the following notice:

Unfortunately, Netflix will no longer be available on this device after March 2, 2026. Visit Netflix.com/compatibledevices to see a list of supported devices. (R40)

Those few gamers still using their PS3s for Netflix quickly verified the authenticity of this message, and it turns out that someone at the streaming service realized they were still supporting a nearly 20-year-old console and decided to pull the plug in March.

Netflix’s journey on the PS3 has been quite the ride. When it first launched in 2009, users had to request a special Blu-ray disc from Netflix to access the service. This was due to an exclusive deal with Xbox that allowed only the Xbox 360 to have a digital version of the app. That agreement ended in 2010, paving the way for PS3 owners to download and use the Netflix app. There was also a Netflix disc made for the PS2, but it never made its way to the U.S.

Interestingly, the Xbox 360 will still support Netflix in 2026. However, since Xbox shut down the digital store for that console in 2024, users must have downloaded the app beforehand or navigate some tricky internet workarounds to get it running. Anyway, thanks to Netflix for allowing PS3 owners to binge the final season of Stranger Things before the curtain falls.
