Netflix unveils details about the upcoming Ghostbusters animated series, Night Shift.
It’s Ghostbusters Day, and Netflix has unveiled the first look at the upcoming animated series, officially titled Ghostbusters: Night Shift, set to hit the streaming platform next year.
Ghostbusters: Night Shift is being developed by Sony Pictures Animation and will premiere exclusively on Netflix in 2027. This new animated series is described as the next chapter in the franchise’s legacy of ghost-catching, blending supernatural comedy with paranormal action.
While details are limited, the series will be executive produced by a talented team including Ben Hibon, Elliott Kalan, Jason Reitman, Gil Kenan, Amie Karp, and Dan Aykroyd. Reitman and Kenan also co-wrote the latest live-action films in the 42-year-old Ghostbusters franchise, Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
Netflix has shared a key piece of art featuring a stylized version of the iconic Ghostbusters logo, suggesting that the series may involve more than just battling spirits from the afterlife.
The Ghostbusters franchise has a rich history in supernatural comedy and has dabbled in animation before. The Real Ghostbusters is the most notable animated series, running for seven seasons and serving as a continuation of the films, featuring many familiar characters and ghosts. In 1997, a different animated series, Extreme Ghostbusters, introduced new characters and adopted a more edgy aesthetic typical of the ’90s.
This new animated series marks the first addition to the Ghostbusters animated lineup since Extreme Ghostbusters. It has been in development for several years, with Dan Aykroyd on board as an executive producer. Until today’s reveal, information about the project had been scarce, especially following the mixed reception of the last major Ghostbusters release, 2024’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
