Netflix’s One Piece reboot opens with a stunning first minute that sets a beautiful tone for the anime.
Since its debut in 1999, One Piece has established itself as one of the longest-running and most impactful anime series ever. However, for newcomers, diving into the show can be a challenge due to the extensive filler episodes in the early seasons and the lower production quality of that time.
Netflix previously broadened the reach of Straw Hat Luffy’s adventures with a live-action adaptation, and now the platform is set to unveil an animated reboot in 2027. A teaser showcased at the Annecy Festival has given us a glimpse of the significant improvements.
The new One Piece kicks off just like the original, with the infamous pirate Gold Roger facing execution and daring the world to seize his treasure, which is all in one piece. Unlike the original’s still images, this reboot presents a fully animated scene filled with vibrant detail, depicting a massive crowd cheering as the execution unfolds.
The fleet of ships setting sail under the Jolly Roger, marking the start of the Great Pirate Era, has transformed from a simplistic cartoonish depiction to a stunning display of advancements in water animation over the past 25 years. The first piece of episodic art from the premiere episode, “Romance Dawn,” highlights these improvements, featuring an exuberant Luffy on deck, basking in sunlight with waves splashing around him.
In a recorded presentation, director Masashi Koizuka shared his enthusiasm for the manga and his desire to evoke the same sense of wonder he felt while reading it in high school. He commended his animation team at Wit Studio for their efforts in adding depth to the One Piece universe, with intricate designs that thoughtfully consider every detail in a scene.
The first teaser trailer for the new One Piece will drop on June 24. Season 1 is set to premiere in February 2027, consisting of seven episodes with a total runtime of 300 minutes.
