Netflix’s upcoming sci-fi Western may be the perfect alternative to Blue Eye Samurai.
Netflix has been making significant strides in the anime space, partnering with prominent studios like MAPPA and Madhouse. However, the platform is also redefining anime by showcasing series that merge Western and Eastern animation styles. This approach resonated well with audiences, as seen with the 2023 revenge thriller Blue Eye Samurai. At the Annecy Festival, Jermaine Turner, Netflix’s director of adult animated series, unveiled a new clip for the show’s second season and teased an upcoming series aimed at the same fanbase.
Bass X Machina offers a unique Weird Western take on the life of Bass Reeves, a historical figure who was the first Black deputy U.S. Marshal and an escaped slave. In a minute-long clip presented at Annecy, Bass demonstrates his cyborg arm’s capabilities by catching a bullet from a minigun fired by an outlaw on a moving train, all while safeguarding innocent bystanders. His arm also transforms into a gun, allowing him to return fire. The intense showdown is set to a hip-hop beat, showcasing Bass’s ruthless side. As the outlaw justifies his actions by claiming Bass killed his brother, the lawman coldly responds, “You’re back with him now,” before executing him.
Brian Tyree Henry, known for his roles in Atlanta and Eternals, lends his voice to Bass and serves as an executive producer for the series. Created by LeSean Thomas, who has worked on The Legend of Korra and Black Dynamite, Bass X Machina draws inspiration from Thomas’s childhood experiences with both anime and American animation. The series is animated by Studio Mir, which is also involved in Netflix’s adaptation of Devil May Cry.
Bass X Machina is set to premiere on November 3, following Bass as he battles supernatural threats, machines, and outlaws in a steampunk rendition of the Wild West.
