New Acolyte Star Wars Novel Unveils Deeper Connection Between the Stranger and Kylo Ren

The Acolyte may have been shelved nearly two years ago, but fresh insights about the series continue to emerge.

Recently, more details have come to light regarding the intriguing connection between the Stranger, also known as Qimir, and Kylo Ren.

In the new book The Art of the Acolyte, the creative team behind the show delves deeper into these ties. The design of the Stranger’s helmet was intentionally crafted to echo Kylo Ren’s, with creature artist Nick Tyrell noting, “The slight frill at the back of the helmet – a design element that traces back to the franchise’s samurai roots, first seen in Vader’s design – suggests a link between the Stranger and Kylo Ren, the masked villain from the Star Wars sequel trilogy, an idea that influenced our storytelling.”

Showrunner Leslye Headland elaborated, “It felt like it hinted at a potential connection to the Knights of Ren with the shape we chose for Kylo Ren. We began to explore that direction. This was reflected in the character’s design, especially knowing we would introduce Darth Plagueis, who ultimately becomes Palpatine’s apprentice. Following the Rule of Two – which restricts the Sith to just two at any time, a master and an apprentice – one way to maintain that legacy is if the Stranger is the first knight of Ren, part of a Sith-adjacent culture that we know eventually endures.”

Additionally, fans of the franchise noticed that the musical themes in The Acolyte mirrored those associated with Kylo Ren in the sequel trilogy, a choice Headland confirms was intentional.

“And since we never name him,” Headland adds, “it leaves you wondering: Does he have a first name with Ren as his last? Is he the original Ren? It’s a clever way to hint at it without revealing too much.”

In a twist, Kylo Ren – or rather, Ben Solo – was almost set to return in a new Star Wars film directed by Steven Soderbergh, featuring Adam Driver. However, Disney shot down the concept, despite support from Lucasfilm. Fans remain hopeful, though, so perhaps we’ll see The Hunt for Ben Solo in the future.

The Art of the Acolyte is set to release on February 3, while The Acolyte will be available for streaming on Disney Plus. Next on the horizon for Star Wars is The Mandalorian and Grogu, hitting theaters on May 22.
