New Anime Gacha Game Disables PayPal After Users Were Charged Randomly Up to $3,300
Players of gacha games often share stories of spending thousands over the years, but at least they do so knowingly. In a twist, players of Arknights: Endfield faced unexpected charges amounting to thousands due to a PayPal glitch, leading developer Hypergryph to temporarily disable PayPal purchases. Not the best way to kick off the game’s launch.
Reports surfaced of strange PayPal charges in various currencies and amounts shortly after Arknights: Endfield went live, with some players seeing deductions ranging from a few dollars to as much as $3,300 USD. The glitch appeared to charge players for purchases made by others linked to the same PayPal account, resulting in charges in multiple currencies instead of just the local one.
Hypergryph quickly acknowledged the issue and has taken PayPal offline for now, advising players to use alternative payment methods for microtransactions.
We have received reports that the PayPal payment channel is currently undergoing temporary maintenance and upgrades.
All affected Endministrators are advised to use other available payment channels.
Transactions involving abnormal item delivery or payment deduction will be handled accordingly.
It’s hard to imagine things could get worse on launch day, but let’s hope those hefty charges weren’t too common. Hypergryph has stated it will address these erroneous transactions, and it wouldn’t be surprising if they offered some in-game currency or rewards as a gesture of goodwill. If you’re diving into Arknights: Endfield, keep an eye on your transactions just in case this glitch impacts other payment methods as well.
