New Evidence Suggests the Trump Phone Might Actually Exist

Where’s the Trump phone? We’re going to keep the conversation going every week. As usual, we’ve reached out to inquire about the status of the Trump phone, and this time we’ve uncovered some new evidence suggesting that a release might be on the horizon.

The Trump Mobile T1 Phone has just hit another milestone on its gradual path to launch. It has received the lesser-known PTCRB certification, which is a crucial step toward being certified for major networks and obtaining IMEI numbers.

You might not be familiar with PTCRB certification — I certainly wasn’t until recently. It’s not something that comes up often. This certification process is specific to North America for smartphones, tablets, and IoT devices, overseen by the CTIA trade association. While it may sound mundane, it’s essentially a prerequisite for any phone debuting in the US.

The fact that the Trump phone has secured this certification is another small indication that there could indeed be a real device in the works. Or at least, I believe it has been certified.

What’s actually been certified by the PTCRB is the SGG-06, a smartphone from Smart Gadgets Global, LLC, which supports 5G, 4G, 3G, and 2G networks. It received its certification on March 9th, just over a month ago.

Regular readers might recognize that name. A month ago, I reported that a phone with the same model number from the same company had received FCC authorization in January. It was listed with the FCC under the trade name “T1,” and Smart Gadgets Global’s CEO is Eric Thomas, one of the Trump Mobile executives I spoke with in February.

During our interview, Thomas mentioned PTCRB certification, explaining that the phone was undergoing the process to get certified with T-Mobile.

“There are probably 30 different tests that need to be completed for a new phone, including putting the phone in a vehicle and driving it around to test connectivity from tower to tower. All those tests have been completed,” Thomas said. “Some of the internal components in that testing, what’s called PTCRB, are currently going through the process. We’ve wrapped that up, and now it’s moving on to debugging, fixes, and retesting.”

When we spoke on February 6th, he indicated they aimed to finish the PTCRB tests by the end of the month, “and then everything goes to T-Mobile for their sign-off.”

If the PTCRB certification was issued in early March — shortly after Thomas’s estimate — then it’s likely that T-Mobile is now in charge of the next steps. I’ve reached out to them multiple times, but so far, they’ve declined to confirm whether the T1 Phone is in the certification process. After a few polite responses, the T-Mobile press office has asked me to stop emailing them and to contact Trump Mobile instead.

In theory, T-Mobile is just the beginning. Thomas previously mentioned that they were certifying with one network at a time to streamline the testing process. Once the T1 is certified with T-Mobile, that certification can be sent to Verizon and AT&T, avoiding the need for redundant tests. I’ve also reached out to those two networks for good measure, but hadn’t received a response by the time of publication.

With FCC authorization and PTCRB certification in the bag, it’s starting to look like there might genuinely be a T1 Phone that’s been manufactured and is on track for release. Will it resemble the latest renders? Will it align with the new spec sheet? Will it offer good value, or will it just be a low-end Android device with a splash of gold paint? Those questions remain to be answered. For now, it’s time to cautiously nudge the Trumpometer back up a notch toward reality.
